Solace in the City

2008 April 28

After two years of life in New York City, well 1 year and 11 months I suppose, I have discovered escape–on the 7 Train.
It started with Jessie’s goal to become a baseball fan, and Erica sharing her knowledge of stubhub with us. $4 tickets to Mets game? Yup, we’re there. Beers and boys and hot dogs and baseball. Or skip the hot dogs and have Subway sandwiches on the Subway.
Whatever the combination–there is something magical about being on that 7 train when it emerges from the underground world of Manhattan into Queens– a strange land where trains travel above ground and there is space to build a new stadium, right next to the old one and they can still get away with charging us $8 for bud light bottles. We also discovered that if you walk all the way down to the end of the platform to get on the train, you can get a whole car to yourself, what might one do with such a discovery? Easy.
